Gary Bowyer's first game in charge of Salford City ended in a 1-0 defeat at St James Park.
Salford started the game well and came close to scoring on a few occasions.
However, Matt Jay of Exeter broke the deadlock on 34 minutes when he followed in a blocked Jake Taylor shot and tapped in the loose ball.
Salford are now 10th in League Two and are now 6 points off the play off spots.
