Clubs Take Part In Social Media Boycott

Many football clubs and players from around Greater Manchester are taking part in a four-day boycott of social media platforms from Friday in a move to tackle abuse and discrimination.

The aim of the campaign is to "show of solidarity against online abuse" and it wants to encourage companies to take a stronger stance against racist and sexist abuse on their platforms.

The sports of Rugby union, cricket and rugby league will join football in this boycott.

The boycott will start at 3pm on Friday, and end at 11:59pm on Monday.

Sanjay Bhandari, the chairman of anti-discrimination charity Kick it Out, told the BBC and other media organisations.

"By removing ourselves from the platforms, we are making a symbolic gesture to those with power. We need you to act. We need you to create change."

Anton Ferdinand, brother of former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, told the BBC:

"Some people don't get out of the slump they're in after being abused on social media, and that can lead to people harming themselves.

"We've got to take this very, very seriously."

Greater Manchester Football is fully supportive of the campaign. This will be the only story that we'll post on social media over the course of the weekend.
