Following the release of our article Bury AFC: Who Are They? we received loads of great feedback so decided to get in touch with the club and ask them a few questions about their progress.
We spoke with Jonny Greenhalgh who is Bury AFC's Media Team Assistant and Social Media Manager.
Q) What was your first memory of watching Bury FC
When I think back the first memory I have is of us beating Preston at home in the playoffs to get to Wembley in 1995, I remember the Preston fans weren’t happy and me and my Dad made a rather swift exit from Gigg as their fans lobbed all sorts of projectiles at the Bury fans.
Q) What was your favourite memory of watching Bury FC
Being around to see Stan Ternent’s promotion team of the mid 90’s and both promotions at Tranmere.
Q) Where did you used to stand/sit at Gigg Lane?
Main Stand, Row B, Seat 34!
Q) How did you get involved with Bury AFC?
I really liked what they were doing and wanted to help, so I got in touch with Adam Ingram, Head of Media.
Q) What was the first match like?
The first match I went to was the first Friendly against Radcliffe, we lost but the atmosphere was fantastic. You could tell something special was happening.
Q) What has been your best moment so far?
When Greavesy scored the winner against Steeton in the first game, wow. After waiting as long as we had for competitive football that game had everything.
Q) Do you as a club look at the likes of FC United of Manchester (a fellow fan owned club) as inspiration of what can be achieved?
Certainly, What FC United have done is fantastic, it’s amazing to know that you own a part of it and that you’re vote counts when It matters.
Q) How has the pandemic impacted the club?
Most definitely. Being limited to crowds of 150 even though our ground can hold 10-15 times that many has been a real downer, we’ve had to allocate tickets to members in turn and some still haven’t managed to get to a game. The fans have been fantastic though, some games you’d thing there was 1500 there the noise that they made.
Q) How can people get involved with the club?
Get in touch! All of the contact information is on the website, drop an email over or approach us at a game and have a chat.
Q) What are your aims for the next few seasons?
As a club we’ve built a team that is ready to take on the NWCFL and I think we’ve probably got one of the strongest sides in our division and the division above so promotion is definitely and aim. We also want to remain to be self sufficient, living within our means and continue our work in the community supporting a plethora of local charities.
Q) Do you think that Bury FC and Bury AFC can co-exist if Bury are admitted to the National League next season?
Wow, that’s a loaded question. AFC's aim and always has been to bring football back to the town of Bury and give people that community hub back that they miss so much.
So far, COVID excluded, we’ve done this, pretty well I think. The slogan is 'By the Fans, For the Fans' and with a membership to serve, we continue to supply the town with a football club. If Bury FC are saved and entered into the league, who knows what will happen, we can't influence this process. Any changes to AFC will be agreed with the members.
Turnstile Football went along to spend the day with the newly formed club.
