Q and A with United Fan Culture Archive

United fan culture archive is a collection of images from United fans that capture and celebrate fan culture over the decades

Q) Please introduce yourself

Michael Brennan, grew up in Flixton, Manchester. Born in 80 so following United since 85.

Q) Can you just describe the United fan culture archive in one sentence?

It’s a collection of images from United fans that capture and celebrate fan culture over the decades

Q) How do people get involved?

Follow on Instagram or Twitter. Submit photos https://unitedfanculturearchive.com/submissions/

Q) What kind of images, pictures, stories have you collected so far?

A really good mix of photos from fans going to games or sporting their colours when they were younger etc. Oldest photo so far from 1967.

Q) What’s been your favourite submission?

Too difficult to choose one. So many good submissions. It’s been great to see. It’s been nostalgic looking back at photos from 80s and 90s, times I remember, but also an education looking at photos and hearing stories from the 70s. A time that a lot of fans remember fondly

Q) Do you have your favourite image that you might have taken yourself?

I have some obvious ones from likes of Moscow, but I rarely used to have a camera when watching United. I wish I had now

Q) Why have you chosen to work with Big Change?

I wanted to do something to support homelessness in Manchester. I don’t know the exact statistics but it feels like it’s got worse over the years.

I was really drawn to the practical nature of what
BigChangeMCR initiative does to help combat homelessness and help people to find a route away from the streets.
It’s also a great collaboration of a number of charities, the council, businesses etc.

I think collaboration is essential in combating such a complex issue

 Q) What was your favourite ever United game?

There have been so many but Old Trafford was absolutely bouncing when beating Roma 7-1 in 2007. The recent 9-0 against Southampton reminded me of being at the Ipswich game when Andy Cole scored 5 back in 1995 which was a good day.

Q) Favourite ever player?
Bryan Robson or Eric Cantona

Q) Where do you normally sit at Old Trafford?

Halfway line of Sir Alex Ferguson Stand. Same place as when I was a ball boy in 95-96 season.

Q) What are your thoughts on United’s current form/league position etc?

Love what Ole is doing with the squad. More work to do but he has back on track. He has restored our identity and I believe we will be back winning titles soon.
