He became an icon and a legend when he returned to manage them. He won the Fa Cup with them in 2013.

He was part of a small Spanish contingent Wigan known as "the three amigos" alongside Jesús Seba and Isidro Díaz, he was a regular first team player for six years, the longest period of time he spent at any one club. He scored 17 goals in 187 appearances.

Return to Wigan as manager
His move to Wigan from Swansea did cause a lot of controversy. He was labelled "Judas" by their fans.
It was an eventful time for the Spaniard, this might be summed up best by their 2012/2013 season. During this season, Wigan were relegated but won the Fa Cup after beating Manchester City in the final. He left at the end of this season and became manager of Everton.
