The proposal, which has been under discussion for almost two years, will be finalised on Tuesday and then signed off by Uefa's executive committee.

Under the new format, the current Champions League group stage will be scrapped.

In its place, the number of qualifiers will be expanded from 32 to 36, with space for two extra 'wild card' entries.

The wild cards will be reserved for clubs with the highest Uefa co-efficient - points used to rank clubs based on past European success - who have not qualified for the competition through their domestic league position.

The proposal has been met by a large amount of criticism from some football fans.

One Twitter user said: I could cry. Football is being absolutely destroyed by greed. Over expanded and convoluted tournaments that move away from sporting merit. Ugh. I might give up on it if some balance is not redressed.

Update: According to the BBC, UEFA has delayed the decision until April on the final approval of the new Champions League format from 2024.
