Rock And Roll Stars: Introducing Callow Youth

Now for something a bit different. We speak with a variety of musicians and bands from across Greater Manchester.


First up is Callow Youth. They consist of:

Alfie Turner - Vocals & Rhythm Guitar 

Nathan Wrigley - Bass

Connor Wilkinson - Drums

Tom Hilton - Lead Guitar

How do you know all each other?

Connor and Nathan went to school together, as did Tom and Alfie and Nathan met Alfie through going to Man City games.

Who do you all support?

The band is 'split' 50/50 red and blue. Alfie and Nathan support Man City - Tom & Connor support Man United, although Connor isnt really that interested in watching football but does enjoy playing.

What are your thoughts on the season so far?

Alfie and Nathan are adamant that city are the best team ever and their season is going amazing... apart from losing to United. 

Tom says for United that there has been ups and downs but it looks as though progression is being made.

Who are your favourite ever players?

For Alfie its Henry, for Tom and Nathan its Messi and for Connor its Casillas. 

Do you have any songs and gigs planned when the world opens up?

We have a lot of upcoming music. Our next single, Straight To The End is out 26th April, which is the title track to our forthcoming EP out on 30th April. In the coming weeks we are hosting a Live From The Edge gig streamed online to raise money for We Need Crew.

As for live shows, we are on tour later this year. Manchester we play Bread Shed - 10th September, London we play The Grace - 18th September and Glasgow we play Hug And Pint - 24th September.

Who are your influences/favourite bands?

As a band, our influences are very wide and varied. A running theme for us all are Beastie Boys.

Connor loves anything, from the hip hop techniques of SOPHIE, Pharrell and J Dilla that aid him with his own production, to the mesmerising guitar riffs of Egyptian Habibi Funk or heavier sides like System Of A Down and Slipknot. 

Tom is another varied open mind whos main influences consist of Radiohead, Prince, King Gizzard and Middle Eastern Instrumentalists from the 60s. Nathan tends to stay quite Guitar Rock n Roll orientated, siting bands like Led Zep, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Greta Van Fleet as his main influences when it comes to bass playing. Musically, Alfie loves Beastie Boys, Radiohead and Sabbath to name a few. 

For songwriting and lyrical influences, its been quite hard creatively lately because of covid, but listening to peoples stories and perspectives of their lives can help come up with ideas for songs and inspire. 

Writers like Neil Young are a big influence as they tell a simple story so effectively and with that we can appreciate those who create narritives from almost nothing and make people feel something through that.
