Congleton 1 - 2 Avro FC

Avro bounced back from back-to-back league defeats as they beat 2nd place Congleton Town 2-1 away from home.

Duncan Knott made his second debut for Avro, having previously played for the club during the Manchester League days.

Congleton kicked off the game and it was immediately obvious that Avro were up for the game more than Congleton.

And this was proven just 4 minutes into the game when Joe Rathbone was played through by Louis Potts and finished into the far corner well beyond the keeper.

But Avro didn’t stop, and kept pushing for more, Haigh trying an ambitious effort from outside the box, seeing it go over the bar, and Joe Rathbone looking for his second of the game, seeing his shot go wide of the post.

Congleton finally woke up and started creating some chances, their main outlet being the giant Tom Pope, but Avro defended well.

Congleton went down to 10 men when Roberts slid in late with a 2 footed challenge on Joe Rathbone, giving the referee no choice but to send him off.

Wallwork nearly put Avro 2-0 up just before the break when he caught Congleton sleeping, took the ball off them, ran into the box, but just got a heavy touch on it and the keeper got to the ball.

Just 2 minutes into the second half, Kane Wallwork was sent off for a second bookable offence - the game was now 10v10.

Congleton really pilled on the pressure during the second half, Latham having to pull off a wonderful save from a Tom Pope header 6 yards out to keep it 1-0.

Avro made a substitute, Duncan Knott coming on for Joe Rathbone for his second Avro debut.

Congleton’s relentless pressure paid off when they equalised through Tom Pope. Pope received the ball on the outside of the box, volleying it sweetly into the top corner.

With the full-time whistle looming, Avro pumped the ball forward for Duncan Knott, but Congleton got to it first and made a routine back-pass to the keeper via the pressure of Knotts, just for the ball to bounce of the Goalkeeper’s shinpad and into the goal.

A great win for the club and you can read more Avro stories by clicking the link below.
